The Blue Mountains Three Sisters
Close to the community of Katoomba, towering above the Jamison
Valley, stands a famous rock formation called the Three Sisters. Located
in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales Australia, the Three Sisters is
probably the most photographed site in the area.
The Three Sisters
The names of The Three Sisters are Meehni, Wimlah and Gunedoo. While
science will tell you that the Three Sisters were created over years of
eroding winds, rains and rivers, the legend of the Three Sisters is very
different.
Aboriginal legend says that three sisters fell in love with three
brothers from another tribe. Battle ensued over the forbidden love.
Their father, Witch Doctor Tyawan turned the girls into stone as a way
of protecting them during the battle. Unfortunately, he died during the
fighting and the three sisters remain encased in stone to this day.
Regardless of which version of the story you would prefer to believe,
the breathtaking view is unbelievably spectacular! One can witness the
awe inspiring view from the cliffs edge or take a walk over the massive
formation of rock, and climb up the sides on the giant stairs. The three
sisters formations stand at 922m, 918 m and 906m – meaning they are well
over 3,000 metres above sea level.
The Three Sisters Skyway
If this magnificent view leaves you wanting to see more, make the
short drive to the Skyway. For the adventurer, and a view unrivalled by
any other, travel 720 metres above the scenery below – with the Three
Sisters still in view. Flip a switch and watch as the floor opens
beneath your feet, leaving you to stand on a glass floor – overlooking
the waterfalls, great ravines and the valley floor far below. This
experience will truly leave you feeling like you are standing on thin
air.
Whichever way you choose to view the Three Sisters, the Giant Stairs
and Echo Point, whatever season you choose to visit – there is one thing
that is a must – you simply must bring your camera. Your eyes may quiet
possibly never behold this level of beauty again and you will want to
preserve these memories forever!
