The Winter Magic Festival – Blue Mountains Australia
Celebrating the winter solstice, The Winter Magic Festival has become
the largest annual event in the Blue Mountains. Organised exclusively by
and for the community, Katoomba Winter Magic celebrates the changing
seasons and incredible sense of community that IS part of living in the
Blue Mountains.
Winter Magic Festival revelries!
The street parade that begins the celebration offers the opportunity
for the exceptionally talented musicians, dancers, and jugglers within
the community to showcase their artistry.
Over 40,000 revelers came out to celebrate the last winter solstice,
and the next is already well anticipated! Capturing the rich heritage
and pride of an entire community events such as storytelling, family
fantasy day and the Winter Magic Ball make this weekend long celebration
– simply - magical.
Held every year on the Saturday closest to the winter solstice, Main
Street is closed to traffic ensuring that the parade, buskers, market
stalls, visitors and performers are not impeded by vehicle traffic. The
Winter Magic Festival features some of the most artistic costumes
inspirable by the imagination. However, you do not have to worry about
being out of place if you decide not to wear costumes. Jeans are just as
commonplace as the face-painted children, fairy wings and clowns that
can be found almost everywhere.
Food is a must at such gatherings. Even though all of the cafés and
restaurants are open for business, most have stalls available on the
streets so that you can continue along with the festivities and not
leave your stomach grumbling. In fact, there is such an assortment of
cuisine available; you just might have a hard time deciding what exactly
you want to eat.
The weekend winds down with a magnificent street party. Such a short
distance from Sydney, those who choose to come from out of town can be
home in plenty of time to prepare for the forthcoming workweek. Check
the local events calendar to make sure that you can make it to this
fascinating celebration.
